A notice has been published in newspapers ordering former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to surrender to the International Crimes Tribunal in the case of crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising.
The notice, signed by Registrar ASM Ruhul Imran, was published in an English and a Bengali daily on Tuesday on the instructions of the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
The notice said that the tribunal has taken into account the crimes brought against the accused in consideration of the formal charges filed by the Chief Prosecutor. The tribunal has reasonable grounds to believe that the two accused are absconding or have gone into hiding to avoid arrest despite the issuance of arrest warrants against them. They have therefore been directed to surrender before this tribunal on June 24. Otherwise, the trial will be completed in their absence.
Tribunal Prosecutor Ghazi Monwar Hussain Tamim said, “In this era of technology, no person knows that a case is being filed against him, which is generally not credible. Nevertheless, the tribunal ordered the publication of this notice yesterday, Monday, in order to follow every provision of the law and in the interest of justice.”
